Can Sex Cause UTIs

While there are a number of causes of UTIs, sex can be one of those causes.  Sex can mechanically push bacteria toward the urethra (yes, even with perfect hygiene). Spermicides and diaphragms change the vaginal environment and increase risk. Pregnancy slows urine flow and relaxes the urinary tract, which can foster bacterial growth. After menopause, lower estrogen thins urethral and vaginal tissues and reduces protective lactobacilli—another reason UTIs become more common. Some women also have underlying factors—like kidney stones, pelvic organ prolapse, or catheter use—that increase susceptibility.

The healthier your body, the more balanced your urinary tract and the better your hygiene, the more likely it is that you won't experience the discomfort that is all too common in modern cultures.  While I am convinced that our life stresses, eating habits, lack of hydration, broken sleep patterns and limited exercise contribute to the massive increase in UTIs, I am also convinced that we can give our bodies a fighting chance to prevent such if we use common sense approaches.  That is why we created Urinary Defense, so you can have a tool in your arsenal to fight this plague upon women.
